Chloroplast degradation

One of the hallmarks of leaf senescence is chloroplast degradation. Chloroplasts are the organelles (intracellular compartments) that perform photosynthesis and therefore are essential for life on earth. Chloroplast degradation is carried out by autophagy, autophagy-independent vesicles, the UPS and chloroplast-residing proteases.
